The Faceless Ghost of HMS Jamaica

Staying with the shipyard theme, a mysterious tale from Dalmuir in Clydebank was reported in the local newspaper, the Clydebank Press, in February 1962.

The story goes that while HMS Jamaica was being dismantled, a shipyard worker who claimed to be alone aboard the vessel suddenly saw a shadowy figure walking past him. At first, he thought it could be another worker, describing the figure as dressed in dark blue clothing. However, when he looked closer at the mysterious figure, he was confronted by something that sent shivers down his spine. Where the man’s face should have been, there were no features, just a grey mass.

Thinking that it could be one of his workmates playing a practical joke, he called out, but as he did so, the figure disappeared. The worker quickly went to find someone to talk about his experience, and while recounting what had happened to another man, they heard a strange noise coming from the area where the encounter had taken place.

The worker maintained that he had never seen a ghost before and knew that some people would dismiss his experience as imagination or a practical joke. Nevertheless, he remained convinced that he had witnessed something he could not explain. The story even reached the ship-breaking yard’s management, with the newspaper reporting that the general manager believed it was a matter for psychic researchers to investigate.
